Outdoor Classroom
Preparing the base for a paver stone circle kit which is being installed today. Stay tuned...
Kota Black Sandstone Slab Step Installation
We designed this over a yearv ago and now it's being installed!
:::Welcome to Our New Site:::
I received a good kick in the pants today to switch my website from Typepad to SquareSpace. How do you like it? I can't take all the credit...Infomatix helped with the switch (thanks very much!) There are a few images that still need to be transferred over but, for the most part, we're live with Square Space. I think I'm going to like it here!
:::Front Entrance Concept:::
Tom and I just completed this design and I presented it to the clients last night. They LOVED it! While we designed their whole property, I zoomed in on the front entrance so you can take a closer look.
It has Kota black sandstone tile in the center, concrete unilock pavers as a soldier course around the walkway 'pads' to give the walkway some extra stability and the curved steps up to the front entrance are granite. Not polished granite mind you, that would be too slippery. This is flamed granite which gives the surface a little 'tooth'.
The planting plan is quite elaborate as the homeowners both love being outside. Wonderful clients to work with!

::: Quote from Landscape Award of Excellence Winner, Randy Tumbler :::
"Even though we always educate our clients about the real costs, we prefer to phase the installation over a period of years [if the price is not in the budget] we've just finished phase 8 of a project we started in 1981. I'd rather my clients phase the project than compromise on quality"

:::Why must we mark our territory with a fence??::::
I don't know about you, but I'm NOT a fan of the 'perimeter' fence. Too much hard and not enough soft. Here's my solution to that. Berm-fence-berm. Repeat. It's great for windy areas and to break up snow drifting in the winter months. I know fences are practical in many circumstances ( pets,children and vandals) but if this alternative suits you- use it!!!

:::Interesting New Products from Landscape Ontario's Congress:::
Cool Seating made from Banas' Natural Stone
Wheeled Chaise made from recycled plastic in several funky colours
I think this canopy/pergola is perfect for our unpredictable weather. It truly would make the hot tub much more enjoyable in the winter.
I attended Congress in January and had intended to post them much earlier! But they are here now to enjoy. If you have any questions just email or call!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful day,
Jeannette

:::Enjoying your Sunset:::
For many, it is desired to have South-Western exposure on the side of the house where you have your deck or patio. But with the way subdivisions are planned these days, not all of us can be so lucky!
You have to make the most of what you have and perhaps create a cozy nook for you and your loved ones. A place to sit and relax at the end of the day and soak up the last of the day's rays.
Below is something I sketched to illustrate this:
I like to break out the watercolours from time to time to give my wrist a break from the stylus. Good creative fun. I hope you can tweak this idea to suit your sideyard! Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

:::Judging the National Awards of Landscape Excellence:::
I just downloaded my judges package for the 2011 awards and I have to say, this is the hardest year yet! The submissions are absolutely stunning. I am proud to belong to an organization that awards greening and beautifying this great nation of ours.

::: Can't Decide? Bell Island Stone vs. Nova Scotia Limestone:::
Two popular stones for natural walls in Newfoundland right now are Bell Island Stone and Nova Scotia Limestone. One comes from Newfoundland ( Bell Island, no kidding!) and Nova Scotia.
For a finished wall, both end up being around the same price and here's why:
Bell Island stone is local, so, shipping prices are lower. It is also harder to cut therefore driving the labour price up.
Nova Scotia Limestone on the other hand has higher shipping costs attached to it but it's easier to cut. Therefore labour price is a little less.
In case price is a consideration ( and let's face it; it always is!) both run around the same price. Now all you have to do is decide which one you LIKE best!
