:::More of the Water Feature:::
If you look at the before pictures of this site (archives) you would know immediately that a waterfall had to be here. The original vision was developed by the talented Frederick Hann and executed by Daisy Design and Bowering Ponds and Gardens. Every time I visit I am drawn to sit and listen and watch the fish play in the bubbling surf, I think sometimes they are trying to jump to the upper pool. It wouldn't surprise me if they did.

:::A Magnificent Fireplace:::
This 3 tiered retaining wall includes a large fireplace on the bottom level. We are using Permacon Monaco wall stone and Sheffield Black sandstone caps and slabs. The colours go well together quite nicely. This location was perfect for lots of hardscaping features and the clients have been so accomodating in sharing and encouraging our visions. It has been a real pleasure.

And you can win this home! Tickets go on sale today to win this beautifully landscaped home located in St. John's East end. It's even fully furnished by a professional interior designer. I designed the outside landscape and Bowering Ponds and Gardens completed the installation. It was a really fun project and the weather cooperated, which is uncommon for this time of year!

:::Lighting your Landscape:::
So today, I meet with an electrician begin installing the best landscape lighting fixtures I have ever come across! Low-voltage and durable for even the craziest of climates.
Cast Lighting has a small product range which first put me off. But after learning their philosophy and looking at how the lights perfom I can't wait to implement them in every design.
The CAST Engineered Wall Light is the latest release and it can be installed in between blocks, underneath caps any place you can think of! besides the wall application we will be installing them underneath the cedar benches surrounding the hot tub for indirect area lighting.
I can't wait to show you the night shots when this is done!

::: Here We Go!!:::
Our first visit of the season. Phase Two is about to begin where the top photo was taken. It will include a retaining wall with built-in fireplace and a second set of steps. The waterfall and pond is being cleaned, mulch is spread and the plants are waking up from winter. We've had a jump start on spring this year and we're excited to get started!

:::Because you are all waiting on pins and needles.....
And quite frankly, so am I! But , this is a big project! Things are looking good; the nightime lighting is spectacular- hopefully I will be able to capture that. I would like to point out that it is unheard of to use a natural rock face in the completed waterfall...typically to ensure a proper seal you have to use a liner between the top an bottom pools. Mark has found a way to get around this and I am pleased. To cover up that beautiful bedrock would be a shame. Let's all say a prayer for no snow this week and I'll post the final pics really soon.

:::How to use your whole pumpkin
Seeds
It can certainly be time consuming to separate seeds from the "guts" of the pumpkin, however it is well worth the effort. Once the seeds are free from the stringy portion of the pumpkin, rinse them thoroughly with cold water. Absorb excess moisture in a clean dish towel. When mostly dry, spread on a baking sheet lined with foil, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite seasoning, whether it be salt and pepper or something a little spicier like chili powder. Or alternatively combine oil with chosen spices in a zip-seal bag and then add the seeds and toss to coat. Bake for approximately seven minutes at 375 Fahrenheit, or until light brown and crispy. If you're feeling really fancy, rinse and dry them, then use them in a recipe like Gnocchi with Pumpkin Seed Pesto.
Flesh
Cooking with the pumpkin's stringy flesh is probably the most common use for the inside portion of the pumpkin. You can prepare it by baking it (350 degrees Fahrenheit), boiling it or microwaving it. If your pumpkin still looks to runny, heat it on the stove over medium heat and cook it until it has thickened to your preferred consistency. Once you have your puree, consider making the traditional fresh pumpkin pie (Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away!) or something more unique like Curried Pumpkin Soup with Maple Caramelized Onions. Freeze any unused pumpkin flesh for use at a later time.
Seeds + Flesh
You can always have some fun with the innards of your pumpkin by using them with your carved jack-o-lantern. Make it look as though your pumpkin is throwing up using the goops, or else consider using the mess to create some much-needed hair for your bald pumpkin.
The outer shell
Once you're done with your jack-o-lantern (hint: if it's so old it starts talking on it's own, it's probably time to go) make sure you compost your pumpkin!
